Sermon Notes | 2.25.24

Matthew 26:47–56

[47] While he was still speaking, Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. [48] Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” [49] And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, Rabbi!” And he kissed him. [50] Jesus said to him, “Friend, do what you came to do.” Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. [51] And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. [52] Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword. [53] Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me more than twelve legions of angels? [54] But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” [55] At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day I sat in the temple teaching, and you did not seize me. [56] But all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples left him and fled. (ESV)

A Loving Response

Matthew 26:47-50

You’re familiar with the old written law, ‘Love your friend,’ and its unwritten companion, ‘Hate your enemy.’ I’m challenging that. I’m telling you to love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the supple moves of prayer, for then you are working out of your true selves, your God-created selves. This is what God does. He gives his best—the sun to warm and the rain to nourish—to everyone, regardless: the good and bad, the nice and nasty. If all you do is love the lovable, do you expect a bonus? Anybody can do that. If you simply say hello to those who greet you, do you expect a medal? Any run-of-the-mill sinner does that. – Matthew 5:43-47 (The Message)

When we surrender to God’s goodness, power, and wisdom then we are free to sacrificially love.

A Nonviolent Response

Matthew 26:51-54

“The first thing any idol takes from it’s worshippers are their relationships; so the best early warning signs that your drifting into idolatry in your work, alcohol, politics, romance novels or whatever your drug of choice may be is your closest relationships begin to decay.” – Andy Crouch

A Truthful Response

Matthew 26:55-56

“As a Christ follower, you are a foot washer, not a doormat.” – Scotty Smith

Jesus doesn’t resist but reasons with the mob.

[3] But with me it is a very small thing that I should be judged by you or by any human court. In fact, I do not even judge myself. [4]  For I am not aware of anything against myself, but I am not thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. – 1 Corinthians 4:3-4

A Prayer for Salvation

“Heavenly Father, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before believed, but through your Son Jesus I can be more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you that he lived the life I should have lived and paid the debt and punishment I owed. Receive me now for his sake. I turn from my sins and receive him as Savior. Amen.”
